    About this Item: printed by Edward Walker for T. Bewick and Longman & Rees, Newcastle, 2 volumes, first edition of volume II, second edition of volume I (the first of volume I first appeared in ). Wood engravings by Thomas Bewick. 8vo., contemporary full calf elaborately decorated in gilt, expertly rebacked with original slightly chipped spines laid down, marbled endpapers. Thomas Bewick was born at Cherryburn House, Eltringham, Northumberland in August of , the eldest of eight children. Early on he demonstrated a talent for art by drawing on the hearthstones of his family home and filling the margins of his school books with pencil sketches of the surrounding flora and fauna. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Newcastle engraver Ralph.

    Robert Elliot Bewick (–) was the son of the engraver Thomas Bewick. his importance nowadays lies more in the 5 manuscript books of Northumbrian smallpipe tunes he left. Three of these, signed by him, and dated between and , give a very detailed picture of the broad repertoire of a Northumbrian piper at this early stage in. The original collection contained over three hundred volumes, in fine bindings, of first and later editions of all illustrated books, over a thousand woodblocks by Thomas Bewick and his workshop, letters, drawings and watercolours as well as Bewick's own tool chest and the table where he worked.
